The short answer is that it is what you make of it.

Believe it or not, even though I am surround by the afore mentioned electronic nirvana, it barely gets a work out.

No, it’s not due to the well argued fact that the PS3 has a lack of games (you can discuss this further if you wish at PS3sucksXboxRules.com). It just comes down to what you want to do with your time each day. I need to really be doing the following each day:

- 3hrs on my real world business a day.

  1. -2hrs on this blog

  2. -5hrs with my daughter (including play time, bath, breakfast, lunch & tea, 5 dirty diapers and an episode of Dora the Explorer)

  3. -1hr on Dinner.

So all up about 11hrs give or take an hour, which is on par with the hours Amanda (my talented better half) puts in. So by the time she gets home we have a few hours of alone time and that is the day.

Obviously a lot of the stuff that goes on during my day are things I have chosen to under take on top of my ‘stay at home duties’. Take out the time spent on my business (a small business that provides support for people with disabilities) and this blog; then I have at least 5hrs to play with.

The problem is that I still have that primal male instinct to provide. I could sit on the couch taking the 49ers back to yet another Superbowl thanks to Madden 2008. But that’s not going to fill that primal urge I have.

The trick is that if you are going to under take the challenge that comes with being a stay at home working or non-working Dad, you have to do so on your terms. It’s going to be damn difficult to keep doing it if you are missing a key element in your life on a daily basis.

If you want to relax whilst the little one(s) is asleep to recharge your batteries in order to get you through your day, or play a couple of maps of Call of Duty 4 online as a needed distraction, then great. Whatever it takes to get the job done and still maintain your sanity.

My advice is to ensure you meet that primal urge that rumbles in every male...

....no that’s not exactly the primal urge I was talking about but then again if that works also then more power to you!
